Our Work

A full house, signing in for a day of accountability.

Our work is focused on a central question: how can communities most affected by policing gain meaningful power in the systems that are supposed to hold policing to account?

We address that question through four connected areas of work: Accountability, Advocacy, Events and Publications.

Together, they allow us to move from lived experience to evidence, from evidence to democratic mandate, and from mandate to sustained public accountability.

01

How the work connects

Our work is designed as a cycle rather than a set of separate projects.

Events and community engagement help identify concerns and build shared knowledge. Our publications turn that evidence into proposals and standards. Advocacy carries those demands into institutions and public debate. Accountability structures then create the means to monitor whether commitments are actually delivered.

That cycle allows communities to move beyond one-off consultation and towards sustained democratic scrutiny.

Our connected areas of work

01

Accountability

We build practical structures through which communities can define expectations, examine evidence, scrutinise institutions and maintain accountability over time.

Our Policing Accountability Framework sets out a replicable model for community-led accountability. We are using it to guide our work with Black communities, beginning with the Birmingham Black Policing Charter.

02

Advocacy

We advocate for structural reform in policing, accountability and community safety. We bring community evidence into discussions with government, policing bodies, elected leaders, civil society organisations and other decision-makers.

Our advocacy seeks to ensure that reform is judged by changes in power, practice and outcomes, not simply by the existence of another strategy or consultation.

03

Events

Our events create spaces where communities, specialists, practitioners and decision-makers can examine evidence, share lived experience and develop collective responses.

From Policing and the Black Child to Beyond Statements: Black Women, Policing and Community Justice, our events have helped shape the policy and accountability work that follows.

Publications

We turn community knowledge and evidence into practical frameworks, briefings, reports and reform proposals.

Our publications span police accountability, racial justice, safeguarding, serious violence, community safety, independent oversight and the relationship between local experience and national reform.
