Beyond Statements: Black Women, Policing and Community Justice

May 2026

Our second major conference focused specifically on the experiences, knowledge and priorities of Black women.

The event brought together more than 100 participants and speakers including Dr Nadia Habashi, former Superintendent Robyn Williams, Dr Shereen Daniels and Dr Bisi Akintoye.

The conference was developed into the report Beyond Statements: Black Women, Policing and Community Justice. Its findings have directly strengthened our Policing Accountability Framework, including our approach to independence, whistleblower protection, disaggregated data, funding for community accountability and democratic processes for establishing community demands.

Birmingham Black Policing Charter launch

April 2026

The Birmingham Black Policing Charter programme began with a public soft launch bringing together community members, the West Midlands Police and Crime Commissioner and representatives of West Midlands Police.

The event marked the beginning of the APA's first live implementation of the Policing Accountability Framework.

Truth and Transformation? The Metropolitan Police Service Two Years Post-Casey

March 2025

Held with the University of East London, this conference examined the Metropolitan Police Service two years after the Casey Review.

Sessions explored institutional racism, misogyny, homophobia, misconduct, intersectionality and community accountability. The conference helped test whether institutional commitments were translating into measurable change and strengthened the APA's work on independent scrutiny.

Policing and the Black Child Conference

May 2024

The Policing and the Black Child Conference brought together hundreds of participants to examine safeguarding, policing practice and the treatment of Black children.

The event generated recommendations that later informed our policy work, including proposals on statutory safeguarding referrals, critical incident responses for child arrests and stronger independent scrutiny of police interactions with children.

Policing and the Black Child community meeting

November 2023

Following serious community concern about the treatment of Child X, the APA convened a public meeting bringing together community members, legal representatives, political leaders, youth voices and policing representatives.

The meeting became an important foundation for the wider Black child safeguarding programme that followed.

Formal launch of the Alliance for Police Accountability

July 2023

The APA formally launched at Lambeth Town Hall, bringing together civil society, community leaders, policing stakeholders and partners around the need for stronger Black community power in police accountability.

Public meeting on the next Metropolitan Police Commissioner

June 2022

Before the APA's formal launch, members of the emerging alliance helped convene community scrutiny around the appointment of the next Metropolitan Police Commissioner.

This intervention captured an idea that continues to shape our work today: communities affected by policing should not be treated simply as consultees. They should be able to organise, scrutinise and help define the standards expected of policing leadership.
